About us

We are runners who love our coffee. But our story goes a bit deeper than that.

Through a longstanding friendship with Haile Gebrselassie, Ethiopia’s double Olympic champion and multi-world record holder, who owns a coffee farm in south-western Ethiopia we wanted others to enjoy some of Ethiopia’s finest coffees and to connect runners who love coffee with Ethiopia, the land of distance runners and the motherland of arabica coffee.

Richard first met Haile at an international track competition in Zurich in 1993.

Some years later when Richard moved to Addis Ababa with his family at the end of his own competitive career the two of them started working closely together as they set up an organisation to stage big mass-participation running events in Ethiopia. Their flagship Great Ethiopian Run International 10km road race became Africa’s biggest running event that today attracts over 40,000 participants.

In more recent years Richard found himself working for Haile in his coffee business and in countless conversations with people in and outside the coffee industry was bombarded with the same question: “Why don’t you produce a brand of coffee for runners who love coffee?”

Having been to Haile’s farm in south-western Ethiopia and become familiar with the operations inside Haile’s coffee business, Richard got together with two running friends in the UK to do precisely that.

With Joel’s wide business experience in online sales and Spencer’s web and digital marketing skills, we took the plunge.

We decided to import green coffee from Ethiopia into the UK and roast the coffee here. While we support the idea of roasting at origin, we also recognise the challenge of delivering product quickly and reliably to consumers around the world and feel that this is best done from a base in the UK.

As runners who have competed alongside great Ethiopian athletes, we marvel at the achievements of their great champions. Now we are keen to connect a wider community of runners to the coffee that is grown there and to the land that produces both world-class runners and some of the world’s best coffee.
